Oh Darling Charms
A review of Oh Darling posted by acam on December 12, 2008 12:21 AM
When: Dec 8, 2008 Venue: Swinghouse Studios Where: LA This highly talented indie pop stopped by the Swinghouse studios earlier this week while recording their new songs in LA and gave the audience a taste of what their eventual next album will sound like (since their first album, Nice Nice, came out in September, it may be awhile). The new songs (they played three in total, out of about seven songs total—it was a short set) sound similar to the old ones, though there’s a bit more rock in them, and the lyrics seem to be a bit brighter. But this doesn’t mean that they’re losing their edge, far from it.Jasmine Ash on vocals and synths and J. Marie Hall on bass were dazzling as always in their opposite-matching outfits. The color scheme for this show was red and black, and Jasmine’s skirt was as poofy as possible. The hair and makeup were eye catching and exotic, standing out in the darkened lights. Daven Hall on guitar and Jake Endicott on drums complemented the ladies in their casual, dark jeans hometown look (the band is from Portland). Jasmine’s voice is so sweet and purring and when she sings, she folds her hands in front of her demurely, that is, when she’s not pounding away on the synths or throwing her tambourine on the ground. Jake had a lot to say during the show from his spot in the back, and could even be seen singing along from time to time. J. Marie would often wander over to Daven to play a riff or two with him. It’s clear that the band is really enjoying themselves on stage. Once the show was over the band could be seen packing up their stuff. Even their cases are darling. J. Marie had a cute, baby blue vintage suitcase for her pedal setup, and Jasmine’s cases for her digital piano and Micro Korg were equally precious. If you get the chance to see Oh Darling for yourself, be sure to fight your way to the front so you can experience their great sound and their great visuals.
