For over a decade, Max Cavalera has been creating unique music that brought together heavy thrash metal with traditional Latin sounds from his native Brazil. Since that time, his radical ideas has widely become an international phenomenon, and tonight's show showed no signs of letting up.
Appearing center stage with his white guitar with the Brazilian flag imprint, he immediately ripped into 'Blood Fire War Hate,' where he led the crowd into chanting those words. His raw, growling vocal style is widely recognized by his fans, and people in the crowd chant along to every word. Then he leads into the Sepultura classic 'Refuse/Resist,' which was one of the many Sepultura songs he performs with Soulfly. His current line up of guitarist Marc Rizzo, bassist Bobby Burns, and drummer Joe Nunez blows through the material, where they especially stand out during the Sepultura material.
Their current set list covered a good cross section of songs from each of the band's recordings, as well as select Sepultura songs. They had the crowd jumping along to favorites like 'Seek N Strike' and 'Bleed,' where the band's earlier groove oriented sound was a key part of the transition from the end of Sepultura. But they also packed in a good number of the newer material, which leans more towards Cavalera's death and thrash metal influences. Songs like 'Prophecy' and 'Frontlines' have quickly become songs that have ignited circle pits throughout their set, and fans frequently attempting to stage dive.
Much like past shows, Soulfly does perform Sepultura classics such as 'Beneath the Remains' and 'Inner Self,' as well as 'Roots Bloody Roots.' These classics have become a part of the Soulfly set list and crowd favorites throughout the evening.
For over a decade, Soulfly has put on strong live performances and tonight was no exception. They have kept the spirit of Latin metal alive, and through all of their inpsirations over the past decade, they will continue to keep creating heavy music that fans for future generations will be inspired by.
