GWAR @ House of Blues LA
When: Nov 24, 2008 Venue: House of Blues LA Where: Los Angeles There are very few bands that put on a show like GWAR does. It is animated as it is bloody. It is packed with energetic, thrashy heavy metal and for over two decades they have put on a stage show that very few acts pull off these days. Fans eagerly awaited the scumdogs from a different universe to bring back their elaborate stage show that they are known for. This time around, they brought back their intergalactic wrestling championship stage show, which was packed with their trademark fake blood splattering around the crowd, plus mock versions of familiar faces getting mutilated by the crowd's favorite GWAR members. The show began with an appearance by a fake Steve Wilkos (security guard of The Jerry Spring Show) mimicking a few lines before getting 'beheaded' by a GWAR member to get the crowd excited. Fans have grown to love the fake blood splattering around the floor, where fans are crowdsurfing around to get soaked in the coloring. These parts of the show have become a fan favorite, and tonight's show was no different than any other GWAR show. Plus the long awaited return of GWAR's 'manager' Sleazy P Martini became a big part of the evening, as his appearance brought out memories of their past shows. His presence was much missed in recent years, but only enhanced the band's overall show. Much of their set was built around band leader Oderus Urungus defending his intergalactic wrestling title. Mock versions of popular figures such as Arizona Senator John McCain, as well as US Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and now President Barack Obama all made appearances to 'wrestle' various GWAR members, before they were 'decapitated' and spraying blood into the crowd. Musically, GWAR's thrashy punk rock sound centers around their fictious travels around the universe and their adventures. Their set list revolves around songs from various points of their career, and especially bringing back older favorites like 'Ham On The Bone.' GWAR is a rock n roll experience that every rock and heavy metal fan must experience at some point in time. The stage show alone is something that fans will enjoy solely for the experience alone. They may be the must needed kick in the rear that the music scene needs desperately.
