before there was daft punk, there was kraftwerk. and, in fact, two years after daft punk ruled coachella's saturday night from the sahara tent, kraftwek owned a portion of 2008's saturday from the main stage.

4 dudes old enough to be my uncle and perhaps some reader's grandfather in tight-fitting leather outfits is not my normal fun saturday evening. but when you have classic like tour de france and autobahn as part of your repertoire, i'll make an exception. the crowd was pretty strong for the kraftwerk set and very diverse -- also really cool and polite which is as much coachella as anything.

the band took stage at twilight and with large projections playing behind them. the visuals were slightly updated (i thought although i might be wrong). here's the set list.

1) kling klang/vocodor intro
2) Man Machine
3) Planet of Visions
4) Numbers
5) Computerworld
6) Tour De France
7) Vitamin
8) Autobahn
9) Computer Love
10) Showroom Dummies
11) Radioactivity
12) Trans Europe Express
13) Metal on Metal
14) The Robots
15) Boing Boom Schak/Music Non Stop

the middle of the set (tour de france through computer love) was the pinnacle for me personally and the perfect graphics for vitamin were amazing even from quite far away (check out the videos). the only glaring omission was pocket calculator and that was a disappointment. but otherwise it was historic german electronic perfection on one of the best stages in the world.
