lacking luster or talent or both
When: Feb 19, 2008 Venue: Schubas Where: Chicago For a super-hyped album, MGMT's debut Oracular Spectacular was OK at best (sorry Columbia, you have no Nirvana on your hands) but in a crappy start to the musical year, i decided to head to Schubas to catch MGMT and YeaSayer (who were awesome -- I'll post a separate review).I'm not sure where to start picking on MGMT. perhaps, i should point out that their live "performances" show them to be the no-talent jack-ass hipster fads that anyone with a mind can see they are. these guys pissed me off so much i actually wanted to rush the stage and kick their ass. I don't mean rush it and push them about like the Toronto fan did to Noel Gallagher from Oasis a few weeks back. I mean i wanted to kick them in the ass like their dads should have done, mug my ticket money back from them, and force them to clean up and wake up. that aside... the music. Good rendition of Time to Pretend. A sloppy "we think we can improvise live" version of Kids was the finale. And a bunch of shiny boring stuff in between. It's hard to make shiny pop boring live but these smelly dudes pull it off. Way to go. Thankfully, Yeasayer blew my mind. On to the pics -- all borrowed from this blogged who liked them a lot more than me... http://thescenestar.typepad.com/ss/2008/02/mgmt-yeasayer-s.html
