**********
10 years -- it's been 10 long years since Neutral Milk Hotel played live (I'm not counting the 2001 show in New Zealand because that was a set that happened to have some NMH tracks but it wasn't a NMH gig).
NMH is/was Jeff Mangum with very some strong musical support from Julian Koster, Scott Spillane and Jeremy Barnes. Some bio details from neutralmilkhotel.org.
********************
Jeff Mangum. Born in Ruston, Louisiana, Jeff is the man behind the songs of Neutral Milk Hotel. He has also made guest appearances on several records made by his friends (see The Musical Adventures of Jeff Mangum). In addition to music, Jeff is interested in other creative avenues, such as drawing and collage. He currently enjoys a life away from the limelight in New York.
Fun fact: "Jeff" is short for Jefferson.
Julian Koster. Wildcard utility player whose versatility and enthusiasm helped give texture to Neutral Milk Hotel's music by adding singing saw, banjo, accordion, and more. He's also worked with Olivia Tremor Control. Before joining up with Jeff Mangum, Julian had a band called Chocolate USA which put out a couple records in the early 90s. He also releases music under the name The Music Tapes.
Fun fact: Julian used to sell pretzels in Union Square Park, NYC.
Scott Spillane. Known for his stellar work playing horns for Neutral Milk Hotel (trumpet, trombone, flugelhorn), as well as sometimes second guitar, tambourine or whatnot, Scott has also appeared on albums and in live shows by Elephant 6 artists such as Olivia Tremor Control, Of Montreal, and Elf Power. Scott fronts a band called The Gerbils.
Jeremy Barnes. In addition to being the dynamo drummer for Neutral Milk Hotel, Jeremy has also played as a member of the avant-jazz trio Bablicon, as well as done guest work with the likes of Broadcast, Bright Eyes, Now It's Overhead, and Of Montreal. He currently releases music self-described as "folk-Dada" under the name A Hawk And A Hacksaw.

But Mangum is the voice and the enigma of NMH and completely the reason fans want to see a NMH show. If you were in school (college or high-school) in 1998 and you were sort of cool then you probably remember In the Aeroplane Over the Sea -- and it probably had a profound effect on you so much so that the last 10 years have been a little more tolerable, a slice more poetic, and whole bunch more beautiful than it otherwise would have been. Aeroplanes was the bands second album but is an unusually accomplished album by any measure and it is unique beyond compare.
Anyway, I could ramble on for the longest time but NMH fans know who they are and know how special a Jeff Mangum/NMH show would be. Ahh.... just venting about the idea of a show is making me feel better already.
Money is almost certainly not the issue -- no doubt about it. There are probably a ton of reasons Jeff Mangum doesn't want to do a NMH show. But that doesn't mean we as fans can let him know in a very real sense how cool it would be.
